APOGEE Lockhart EXISTS TO educatE the hearts of our children

one village at a time

MENTORS WHO MATTER & EXPAND FREEDOM, TRUTH, & COMPASSION

HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MENTORS WE HAVE HAD AT APOGEE

OUR WHY

Philosophy of community

We dream of a world where our children don’t have to

spend the second half of their life de-programming and un-

learning. We strive to create a social and emotional

ecosystem that supports the natural evolution of free

thinking, open minded, grounded, and heart centered

children- adults. The environment of the child’s human

experience informs their relationship to themselves and each

other. The health of our community depends on the diversity

and tending to our eco system and social permaculture.

The importance and depth of educating children includes

the family dynamic, the community and the notion that it

takes a village to raise a child. Parental involvement is

crucial to the health, well being, depth of learning, support

and love that a child needs to thrive.

In practice, this involves parents committing to reading,

writing and reflecting with their kids at night. Taking an

active role in events, ceremonies and celebrations as the

whole village will take part.

In addition, we will offer parental classes, language classes,

mentorship and volunteering opportunities to create a

community learning exchange.

Our vision is that schools and teachers do not have the sole

responsibility of raising and educating children as it is a

shared community contribution.

Philosophy of Learning

The framework for the Life Learning Center is Holistic Education, which is defined as the development of every person's intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative and spiritual potential. It seeks to engage students in the teaching/learning process and encourages personal and collective responsibility.

The goal is to create a space for kids to nurture their individuality as well as cultivate community and collaboration. Specific studies will be curated based on student interest which helps to foster their curiosity through Project Based Learning. Most schools operate on the basis of "provide the lessons to students then give them a test." we will operate on a system of provide the students with a test/activity/opportunity, and then they will get the lesson.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

FOUNDERS WHO CARE & WHO GO ALL IN TO EXPAND FREEDOM, TRUTH, & COMPASSION

Ethan Peters

Ethan was born and raised in rural New York State, hours from NYC and surrounded by Amish communities, dairy farms, forests and waterfalls. His parents raised him on 100 acres of mostly forest where they also grew everything they ate, which included herbs, vegetables and fruit trees, raised chickens for both eggs and meat, made maple syrup, fished and hunted. Much of the food was prepared and preserved for winter in a root cellar. Most of the summers were spent cutting and hauling wood to be prepared for winter as the house was heated with a large wood furnace. This has largely influenced the desire and passion in his life and to re-create this not just for his own family but for a community.

At age 17, Ethan began working at the summer camp he attended every summer since his youth as a camp counselor at a Lutheran camp. Working with kids was something he enjoyed at a young age, taking them on nature walks, swimming in the lake, games, ropes courses and so much more.

He went to college first for classical guitar (for a semester – longer story here) and then switched to Biology. By sophomore year he was conducting research on bats, working in the field and the lab, and with other students. Throughout Graduate school as a grad assistant, he was teaching labs and managing undergraduates on the research team for his thesis.

After college, he went to work for Florida Atlantic University as a research assistant in the Florida Everglades, which took him to every corner of the park by airboat or helicopter. Eventually he had to start taking seasonal jobs as that is typical for most field biologists starting out as they are grant funded. However, he wanted to have roots in a single place and landed in Austin, TX to begin teaching high school science. This was a combination of two loves, kids and nature. This set the path for the next 16 years of public education work. He was soon asked to be an Instructional coach for other teachers, then an Assistant Principal and eventually was asked to be a Principal of a small high school in Lockhart, TX in 2019.

Never seeking these promotions, he was led by a combination of fear and responsibility, to go where fear leads because that is the greatest source of growth. All of these combined experiences has fostered a strong desire to create something new and to break away from the set programming most kids are on as he has seen firsthand how limiting it can really be. A system for kids built on family, nature, self-sufficiency, sovereignty, individuality and innate wonder.

Angela Bartys-Peters

Angela was born outside of New Orleans, LA, and spent her childhood in Louisiana, Central California, and San Antonio, Tx. She has always been a dreamer (with a healthy dose of realism) drawn to music, theater, culinary arts, poetry, and anything and everything “strange,” esoteric and “not normal.” As a child she was deeply sensitive, and had a fascination with human behavior and relationship with others at a very young age. Her mind was always hungry, and her heart always seeking, and music was the thread. She went to Belmont University in Nashville, TN to study Music Business and Recording Technology while working as a production and casting assistant for CMT/MTV & a Hostess at Jazz Club. Angela left for the big wild city of Los Angeles, CA where she spent years combining and cultivating all of her passions into a fun, multi faceted, successful life. She attended Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, worked  in a handful of restaurants, eventually shifting to private chef work, and ending up as the chef at a teen rehab center in Malibu. This is where she realized that cooking was more than the Micheline Star and the famous chef..it was about nourishing and bringing people together. Food and communion was medicine.

Angela continued her work in production as a Producer on many reality tv shows including Million Dollar Listing NY, Real Housewives of New Jersey, My Diet is Better Than Yours, and many others. Although it was an exhilarating, fast paced, and exciting job, it revealed to her a whole new level of human behavior, toxic work environments, and the grueling and cutthroat life of Hollywood. This was an epic study on the psychology of fame, unhealed trauma, and poor communication.  In 2007 she booked an incredible voice over job in Disney’s Tinkerbell, and was the voice of Fawn Fairy. That led to working with DreamWorks on How to Train Your Dragon, multiple video games, toys, tv shows, and commercials.

Angela lived a full life, and was always juggling multiple projects, events, and personal growth. Through all of the glimmer and facade of successes, there was always a desire to go deeper, to understand life and herself more. That calling to learn, to connect, and to share grew stronger every year. She was always in a class, workshop, reading, practicing or studying different religions, philosophies, theories of the Universe, neuroscience, health and fitness, psychology, mysticism, sound healing, alternative medicine, psychedelics, and ancient wisdom.

After a life altering spiritual awakening in 2015, it was time for change. It took a few years learning to operate with a new perspective and awareness, but in 2018 after 15 years in LA, Angela moved to Blanco, TX where she took time to rest and reconnect with her mission and purpose. She continued her studies and practices of alternative medicine, food, and healing, and began developing an idea for a Culinary School for kids with a focus on health and wellness from the soil and soul.  She met Ethan in 2019 who was planning on leaving public education and starting a nature school. It was divine timing and an instant connection. Their mission began. Ethan took a Principal position in Lockhart and Angela opened a Wellness Haven with her sister Allison, providing alternative healing modalities, events, herbal medicine, and retail. After having their son, their mission got more real, more important and urgent than ever. Observing the world around them, they knew there had to be a better way to educate and guide our children. Combining their dreams, skills, experience, and devotion, almost 6 years later, the dream is coming full circle with Apogee School of Life.
